Even when we want to change we can often feel ourselves getting upset when change starts to happen. I have dealt with grief from the loss of a comforting ritual, anger at the resistance to change, or sadness at the lack of expectation when I was told that my being here was enough.  I wasn't expected to make any change. Soul destroying. 

Now I recommend that everyone read White Fragility because it ensures that everyone wants to get involved in making change. But when the actual reality of what change means is faced, very deep emotions can show up. If only there was a way to have those emotions soothed so we could change and transition with peace of mind.
